The drive from Brooklyn to the North Fork of Long Island is a journey of changing landscapes. In mid-October, the lavender fields lie dormant, with silver shrubs months away from blooming. Wild sage lines the roads, and a cracked window fills the air with the intoxicating smell of the ocean.
Then there is the ferry to Shelter Island, where a little bookshop smells of cedar and cypress from its majestic shelves. Another ferry to Sag Harbor brings us to the South Fork, where the wild sea whips mist from the frothy Atlantic. The drive continues to what feels like the end of the world—until the Montauk lighthouse appears.
