It begins with an arrival in darkness. The power is out at Ripplewood Resort, and the only light comes from the stars overhead and a bonfire built for warmth. There is a forest here—its enormity can be felt, heard, and sensed in the blackness—but it cannot be seen. Not yet.

The first light reveals what the night had hidden: ancient redwoods, towering impossibly high, their trunks wider than arms can wrap around.
